John is one of the 12 disciples of Jesus and a cousin to Jesus (Mary, Jesus' mother was the sister of Salome, mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee "sons of thunder"). The first letter is written to all of the churches and John was probably in Ephesus at this time.
